Position Title: Research & Public Policy Intern
Reporting to: Government Affairs Deputy Director
Location: Washington, DC
Compensation: $1,000 stipend per semester
MAG US is looking to hire an intern to support its expanding policy research and advocacy work and is seeking candidates looking to gain experience in government relations and policy research. This position is based in our Washington, DC office, which is currently operating on a hybrid remote and in person schedule. Ability to work in-person at our Washington, DC office two days per week is preferred but not required.
Mines Advisory Group (MAG) US is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, with an independent staff and Board of Directors. MAG US is MAG’s partner organization in the United States, based in Washington D.C. and responsible for raising awareness and funds to support MAG's work.

The Research & Public Policy Intern will support research, writing, and engagement with US policymakers, particularly Congress. This work will seek to inform, update, and educate policymakers on the work of the Department of State’s Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) Program, the Department of State’s office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA), and the US Army’s office of Humanitarian Demining Research and Development (HDR&D), and the vital work these programs enable MAG’s humanitarian mine action (HMA) and weapons and ammunition management (WAM) programs to deliver.
Potential responsibilities:
The role can be adapted to better cater to the professional interests of the selected candidate. S/he will have the opportunity to work with relevant staff in MAG US and MAG on tasks related to government relations, research, and communications:
- Produce internal and external communications about MAG’s programs.
- Take on research products related to developments in the sector.
- Support direct engagement with policymakers, mostly in Congress.
- Conduct research on politics and legislation.
- Support and/or lead outreach efforts to other policy audiences, such as Think Tank and the media.
- Support the development of special research projects. Support the MAG US Grants Department in research and administrative efforts as they relate to our work with US government donors such as the Department of State and USAID (database management, case study editing, and more).
What we’re looking for:
- Deep commitment to MAG US's vision, mission and values and the ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
- Interest or experience in Congress and government relations.
- Interest or experience in policy research.
- Interest or experience in advocacy writing/communications.
- Interest or experience in international development.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong writing skills.
- Strong academic background in related field (International Relations, Political Science, Regional Studies, Public Policy).
- Experience with Microsoft Office tools (specifically Word and Excel) preferred
Timing and hours of the internship are flexible—fall/winter period is generally envisioned. Apart from the $1,000 stipend, supervisor will provide necessary support for academic credit, if requested.
