Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a non-governmental organization that assists people affected by landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO) with support from the U.S. Department of State and USAID. Established in 2002, MAG US was established as a sister organization to MAG in order to save lives and build safer futures by supporting the work of MAG.
Working closely with The Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA), as well as USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), MAG helps over a million people each year in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe rebuild their lives and livelihoods after war.
MAG takes a humanitarian approach to landmine action, focusing on supporting local communities with risk education and by training local landmine/UXO removal staff to promote self-sufficiency and sustainability. MAG also works with foreign partners to secure small arms, light weapons, and ammunitions stores from causing harm to civilians.
MAG also partners with the Fort Belvoir, VA-based Humanitarian Demining R&D Program of the U.S. Department of Defense to implement rapid development, testing, demonstration, and validation of technologies that increase the efficiency and enhance the safety of humanitarian demining operations.
Policy and Advocacy
MAG US's advocacy work in Washington seeks to raise awareness of this work amongst policymakers and ensure that the United States remains the global leader in foreign assistance for Conventional Weapons Disposal (CWD) and Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA), which is an invaluable and tangible foreign assistance that bolsters U.S. leadership abroad, global security, and economic development for America’s allies.
MAG US also supports the 32-member bipartisan Congressional Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)/Demining Caucus, led by Co-Chairs Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA-14) and Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH-6). MAG US, alongside fellow demining group The Halo Trust, works with the Caucus on expert briefings and other events to promote continued Congressional leadership on HMA.
